there are some practical solutions in germany. The main problem in our expirience is the vapor phase in using, regulation and safety control. This could be one point for some problems.

There is a New Solution For Cooling Solar Panels ...

A new technique for cooling solar panels has been under development in Egypt. A mixture of water, aluminum oxide, and calcium chloride hexahydrate cools the PV modules from underneath.

How It Works

The PCM mixture was heated to melting point to form a liquid and Al2O3 nanoparticles were added to it in the aluminum channels. “The dispersion of particles in the PCM liquid is done using an agitator bath with four different mass concentrations,” the group stated.

“Applying the cooling system, whether using water and/or [the] Al2O3/PCM mixture provides a noticeable drop in cell temperature compared with the uncooled [panel],” said the Egyptian team.

The researchers said a mixture of water and the Al2O3/PCM liquid outperformed the use of water alone and the best performance recorded used 75% water and 25% Al2O3/PCM.

The research findings are explained in more detail in the paper “Performance enhancement of the photovoltaic cells using Al2O3/PCM mixture and/or water cooling-techniques,” published in the journal Renewable Energy.

Whether this is a cost effective solution — allowing for enough extra revenue through greater energy production (thanks to greater efficiency) than the solution costs — is not discussed. Assuming it is cost effective in some regions, those would presumably be places that get quite hot.

there do exist on the market PVT modules, that are PV modules with water piping on the backside. experience has shown that the overall yearly electricity yield is lower with water cooling because it also has a relative heating effect in the morning and evening when the cool air would otherwise cool the module from behind, increasing yield. The business plan for these modules is in an application where there is a requirement for preheated water. In such cases, depending on the cost of heating water opposed to the tariff earned for producing electricity with the module there could be a significant IRR for the project.

I would like to pay your attention that the matter of cooling the modules to enhance their conversion efficiency is a marginal process where it depends much on how it is implemented. I would like that you read the technical report in the link:

It is reported by forcing very thin water film to flow at the Glass of the solar panels when the ambient temperature is in excess of 25 degree centigrade one could increase the PCE yearly by 8% and 12%.

So, there is no unified answer to your question.

But I would propose that one one cools the panels by the ambient air where normally the panels are mounted inclined tilted to the south in the north hemisphere. Normally the air flows from the north to the south. It will flow at the back side of the panels and cool them. I observed this on panels installed in Egypt.

But I did not study systematically such cooling effect.

I believe the original post was referring to a sub-industry of PVT, or PV thermal where water is fed through piping on the back of the module and used for preheating.

There is one answer to this specific question, and it is regularly validated by such projects.

similarly, There is one answer to the question "can water cool the modules to increase production", and you gave that answer.

it is simple physics, keep the cell at 25 degrees, supply it with 1000 watt/sq.m at the specified colour and the module will produce accordingly.

if the water cools, the cell produces more.
