Strains of Bacillus or recently, Geobacillus stearothermophilus are very susceptible almost to all antimicrobials and are used in the detection of antibiotics in food or other samples.
My question, how this fragile bacterium survive in soil which is home to millions of types that produce antibiotics.
This could be a good discussion.
I think, soil is an open system. Not all antimicrobials are present everywhere and in enough concentrations.
If susceptible bacteria are in contact with anitimicrobials, they die and if they survive, their surroundings must be enough for the survival.
Here, I try not to include the genetic mechanism or any possibility of the defense mechanism.

being a termophile such as the G. strearothermophilus means being capable to survive in environmental conditions where other organisms are not. It is true that is very sensitive to antibiotics but I guess that here pure evolution comes in. Instead to produce antibiotic to compete in the same space (such as Aspergillus spp.), it would be possible for such organisms to simply being able to adapt to a more favourable environment. Here the capacity to survive in hot springs and high temperature environment. Not to forget, it is a well known biological indicator for sterilization purposes. As dr. Abhijeet Singh said, the soil is an open system, and I would like to say furthemore a vast one, with many niches available for different organisms.

I think many factors can influence the presence of G. strearothermophilus in soil: presence or absence of antimicrobials; if presence of it what is its concentration; how much G. strearothermophilus is suscibtible or tolerance to antimicrobials; microenvironment conditions and other factors.
