I have tried to detect the natural defects in the kenaf/PU composites by infrared thermography. In my experience I did not add the defect, but after the detection by an infrared camera, I did open the defected area to determine the source of the defect, which was mostly misaligned fibers and voids.

Thank you much for your answer, a very interesting exercise. I would like more information: what kind of IRT system, with what mode you analyzed and used for this manufacturing defect. I think you cut and opened a natural defect, I would ask if you tried to reproduce the defect on the same material. to see if the results are the same.

There are many factors that are important to detect the intended defect. For instance,
- the defect's material: I mean, that defect has been created by air or inclusion of other substances.
- the amount of difference between thermal properties of the main material and the defect.
In addition, I could not understand your purpose in the vertical part of the defects. What direction or plane is your reference for this intention? Are the defects perpendicular to the plane (surface) in front of IR camera? or ...
There are a lot of papers that have investigated different damages and defects like your case, however, first of all, you need to specify your properties and setup.
Even, there are some papers that are particular for advice in this field. For example, by using the following paper, if you have some important characteristics, you can find out that the detection by thermography method is feasible or not:

)To identify whether thermography technique is useful or not for your purpose, the best manner is that:
1st: simulation of the thermography process by Finite Element Modeling based on the materials and the amount of heating
2nd: comparison between the obtained temperature difference due to defects and IR camera's sensitivity.
