Variable Transformations Log or Square root ?

HI Team,

I have one of the independent variable as age which is highly skewed. i need to apply the variable transformation technique on this variable before i included it in the model either Logarithmic or Square root.

While i understand the square root transformation can be majorly applied on count data such as prediction of the number of times a person perpetrated domestic violence against his or her partner but not sure how would size data mean.

Do advice what are the cases & reasoning to apply these transformations and when.
