I enrolled for a PhD Programme in Computer Science. For my research work I am looking for a topic to choose which could make an impact and solve a Business problem.
my area of interest are Data Science, Ecommerce, AL, ML Sensor technology.
Given your areas of interest, one idea I had would be an analysis of artificial intelligence powered vision sensor theft detection.
There are several providers of cameras or visual sensors (lidar, radar, etc.) that utilize AI and ML powered software to detect patterns of theft. One key question is whether businesses are better off implementing this technology or just writing off the cost of the theft, which would require determining the accuracy of these systems, cost of implementation, and technology limitations (i.e., can someone get away with theft undetected).
I think this question would be interesting for a couple reasons. First, it would make an impact and solve a business problem. Second, it would combine a lot of your areas of interest (data science for the analysis portion, e-commerce for the business side, and AI/ML/sensors for the software side).
Great to hear that you are pursuing a PhD in Computer Science and looking for a research topic . Research topics that can make an impact and solve a business problem include predictive analytics for e-commerce, anomaly detection in sensor data, fraud detection in e-commerce transactions, personalized products, optimizing supply chain, and optimizing logistics. These are just a few examples to consider, and you can explore and refine these topics based on your specific interests and goals. Make sure to consult with your advisor and industry experts to ensure that your research is impactful and relevant to the business problem you are trying to solve. Good luck!
Vivek Bhatia ---- Vivek, The first thing you should do is meet with a faculty advisor. Ask questions and find your expectations "fit" with theirs. Find out what they expect from their Phd candidates. From there put aside the heroic mission to "make an impact and solve a Business problem". Instead, look at your current work and pick the subject that excites your curiosity. Then, the hard part, figure out what the question is that gets closest to that part. After that schedule a 2nd meeting to explore what that question is about. Know the latter and you'll have a way to learn more. Oh, and please don't tell the school that after years of study and a global culture encountering forms of ChatGPT, AI and the coming AR. glasses that you have no ideas of your own.
