Preprint Universal use of face masks in COVID-19 pandemic: yes or no?
Stop face masks hysteria! Guidelines for face masks use must be accurate, precise, specific for every group of individuals and specific situations.
Mandatory universal face masks use is psychologically abusive, imprecise and irrational.
People then tend to use low-quality masks (because high-quality masks become unavailable for those individuals who really need such masks) for a very long period of time (sometimes even a week), which is counterproductive and does not meet any scientific criteria for the prevention of infective diseases.

COVID_19. prevention will continue to rely on non_pharmaceutical intervention including pandemic mitigation in the community setting .So use of fase masks with or without eye protection to achieve additional protection in the community.

As with most questions, the full answer is 'it depends' . The biggest open question is whether or not there should be an enforceable mandate. That is is a moral and political issue, not a scientific one, although the science does help to 'populate' the discussion. From the point of view of public health guidance and personal responsibility to reduce the risk that you transmit the virus to others, I think it is a more or less clear 'yes' in any vaguely confined space and / or where distancing is difficult. Masks are an important adjunct to other source control measures and even low quality masks are likely to provide benefit at a population level - reducing the level of contamination and the risk of spread. My personal feeling about wearing face masks (irrespective of quality) gives you a certain protection from covid-19 virus. Percentage of protection will depend on the quality of the mask and how correctly the person wear it. Also face mask is not a 100% solution as well. But different people may have different views. Ask Donald Trump, he may have a completely different view.
