Can you be more clean in exactly what you are planning to do and what is your actual question?
NGS research is not a type of study. There is always a question and NGS is just a tool which might help to answer or get clues of it.
It sounds to me, with the little information you provide, you wish to use transcriptomics to study cellular mode of action in response to chemical exposure. There is plenty of literature on such data and analyses in the literature, using microarray expression data, RNA-Seq and high throughput techniques such as BioSpyder Inc's proprietary TempO-Seq ligation assay. Just do a PubMed search for "toxicogenomcis" and you will find a couple of recent review-type articles (e.g. PMID 30594306 & PMID: 29917034). Or use a boolean search like "environmental AND toxicology AND transcriptomics" for more specific examples relevant to your field of study.
Toxicogenomics can include transcriptomics, genomics and epigenetics, (or be combined with other 'omics data as well, such as metabolomics). Data can be generated from in vivo or in vitro exposures. You can use the data to investigate MoA, identify adverse outcome pathways, infer points of departure from benchmark dose, use various predictive modeling approaches to define predictive biomarkers - all sorts of applications of 'omics data in toxicology.

In the light of you explained, I can see that all toxicogenomics studies are analytical, but can we say that most studies are observational (retrospective & prospective cohort) or interventional (RCTs) ?
