Sustainable Energy Future reflects a universal cry from countries, industries and citizens. Sustainable energy provides for the energy needs of today without jeopardizing the energy needs of future generations. In reality, energy affects every area of human existence, and the lack of access to clean, affordable and renewable energy hampers sustainable development at the national, regional and international levels. More than 85% of the world’s current energy needs are met through fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas; and the global demand is likely to increase by 45% by the year 2030. To offset this prediction and decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the ISO has been adamant in publishing applicable and practical international standards to heightened awareness of practices government, businesses and consumers can use to increase energy efficiency, reduce cost and improve performance with renewable energy sources. Proper management and implementation of these standards can provide a positive impact on 60% of the world’s energy in the long-term by the year 2050.

I have used material flow analysis to research the oil and gas related inputs to urban residential construction, with the aim to assess the impact on sustainable development. My PhD thesis (Bond University 2016) showed that medium rise medium density apartment buildings used the least embodied energy. The 'green' design of such buildings also contributed to lower operational energy consumption.

Minimizing energy consumption both at the building scale and the city scale is now a major challenge to civilization. Climate change require us to more decisive measures in this area. Together with the widening globalization, rapid technological development, increasing resource scarcity are set to place intense pressures on national economies in the 21-st century. Nowhere are these challenges being played out more immediately than in the energy sector. Urban management and integrated smart development play crucial role in minimalization of energy consumption and CO2 production. New approaches in sustainable urban and architectural planning are to be introduced. An important link in this process can be new approach to settlements, that are using new technologies focused on energy self-sufficiency and green footprint. this could a good example of such approach.

Usama Badawy , Thanks a lot for sharing your views and outlook towards the Integrated Smart approach. I too feel that, at-least in India, things are different within Govt organisation and public at-large, when the Urban Planning and Sustainability comes into path.

You know when the government of India announced the Smart City Mission long back, the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) , an independent body under the department of consumer affairs, decided to create standards to define what services and infrastructure a city should provide to be called a smart city in the Indian context. The bureau, which is in charge of defining national standards for goods and processes, noted that the idea of smart cities varied from country to country.

It thwarted the Bureau of Indian Standards’ plan to fix clear criteria for defining a smart city, and came out with a fuzzy ‘Liveability Index’ instead. The committee comprised nine multidisciplinary working groups, which, after a year of deliberations until September 2016, came up with 46 core and 47 supportive indicators to assess city services and quality of life across sectors. These included indicators on economics, education, energy, environment, health, governance, transport, shelter and safety. Other indicators related to particulate matter pollution, renewable energy consumption, the unemployment rate, the ratio of police personnel to population, and the infant mortality rate. The draft prescribed methodologies to measure data on each of the indicators. “Sustainability as a general principle” was at the heart of the standards, the committee said. In its initial guidelines for the Smart City Mission, the ministry had stated, “There is no universally accepted definition of a smart city. It means different things to different people…Even in India, there is still no one way of defining a smart city.”

Roger James Brewster : It would have been a good experience to work upon MFA tool. I read 2/3 papers related this, but I not related to Oil and Gas. I believe you might have measured the Hazardous Substances, set of material flows, stocks, and processes within a defined boundary. Can you share, what were the target research questions, what were primary objectives? Scope( Spatial or functional ?) and what system boundaries were chosen. How do you have defined the start and end of flows ?

Part of my research into the impacts on urban development and city form was based on the concepts of urban metabolism (UM). Tamer's suggested responsible management of resources consumption is also one of many aspects of UM.
