To discuss this interesting subject, we must first distinguish several types of droughts:
- Meteorological drought is prolonged precipitation deficit.
- Agricultural drought is characterized by a deficiency of water surface soils (between 1 and 2 m deep), enough to affect the proper development of vegetation. It depends on rainfall and evapotranspiration. This concept takes into account the evaporation of soil and plant transpiration (water drawn by the roots is evaporated in leaves). Agricultural drought is sensitive to precipitation, humidity and air temperature, wind but also the nature of plants and soil.
- Hydrological drought finally manifest when the lakes, rivers or aquifers show abnormally low levels. It depends on the rainfall but also soil conditions affecting runoff and infiltration. The river system determines the response time to precipitation deficits observed over different periods.
