When I read photosynthesis-related articles, I will often encounter methods or figures that states something along the lines of:

[...Membrane potential changes induced by a saturating continuous

illumination (kiPSII 500 s^-1, kiPSI 2000 s^-1)....].

I never really understood the terms kiPSII and kiPSI and how to calculate/obtain them.

these are rate constants: Photosystem II has a rate constant of 500 /sec, Photosystem I of 2000 /sec. The "i" subscripts may refer to "initial rates" - the rate constant may change over time with continuous illumination. There are a variety of methods - mostly spectroscopic - to measure the rate constants.
