What I usually did was, from those variables with a Pearson correlation coefficient > 0.7, and before to run Maxent, I chose the most ecologically relevant variable for my species (see this paper and its supplementary material: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/280881357_Declining_relict_plants_Climate_effect_or_seed_dispersal_disruption_A_landscape-scale_approach). However, this method always has some degree of arbitrariness. A less subjective approach could be using a Jolliffe’s Principal Component Analysis. I prefer using a correlation analysis, PCA and natural history of the species to delimit number of predictors.
