I will be recording my PhD defense and I am considering posting it on YouTube. I want to broadcast my science as widely as possible but I'd like to do so cautiously. The work I am presenting is in various stages of publication. In my field (conservation genetics), it would be virtually impossible for someone to scoop me with what I'm presenting. I am concerned, however, that posting on YouTube would be construed as a form of publication by some journals.
What are your thoughts?
Hello Erin, you're right that some journals would consider posting on YouTube as a form of publishing, disseminating information. Some journals prefer us NOT to put our work in a public repository, so that money is earned by them for each read or download. ResearchGate works for the contrary principle of making science free. It is quite a good idea to post your PhD defense on YouTube with one prerequisite: to publish first your results in Journals, symposia etc. You may have a delay but, in this way, you would satisfy your desire to post your PhD defense with safety.

The giving a copy of your thesis to the examining committee and the presentation of part of your research to the committee, and answering questions is not publication in journal format. Nor is a video of your defense anything like the format of a journal. A YouTube post and even a link from RG to your defense video would not decrease journal sales or your chances of being accepted for publication. Be proud. Do it today.

What about the case in which someone would see the relative YouTube post of Erin, if she has posted her PhD defense, and would publish, in some way or other, using some of her ideas? How Erin could handle it?
From my experience, irreversible situations are possible to arise, if the steps are not careful. In any case, prevention is better.
Erin is working on using DNA to determine the movements of wild birds. In retrospect, this is an "obvious" use for DNA. So anybody can use DNA measurements to monitor the movements of any wild animals, birds or even rats* in New York. What she and the U of Arizona alone had was the collected DNA of the birds, and no-one can steal that away. Furthermore her results on the genetic diversity of the particular endangered birds is unique, and no-one can pretend that they have made those measurements themselves, as they do not have access to the American birds, equipment and software. I am sure that Erin & colleagues would be delighted if other researchers used her techniques, temperatures and cycling and found similar results or different results on animals that are becoming scarce.
You, for example, have been working on rice and wild-sage. Certainly you can(?) buy the equipment and software, and use it to analyse the DNA of rice and wild-sage populations around the world. Erin will surely not mind!
However, you are right. If Erin is seeking to patent her temperatures and timing, then she would be well advised not to publish even in journals until her patents have been granted.
