Though the potential of processing nano-steel and nano-castiron for novel applications is immense, the realizations are meager. Why? Carbon's polymorphic and allotropic forms can be best used in Steel and cast irons where you need less than 6 wt % of their additions. But this change over is not happening in any appreciable way . Why and what could be the reason that hampers their usage?
Simple economics. Iron and steel are commodity items - there would have to be huge technological advantages to using nano for it to be adopted.
Both of them have immense potential. But processing problems still exists. Hydrogen embrittlement and failure in the process of cyclic loading is the problem with nanosteel to be used. Agglomeration during processing of nano cast iron is another problem. Different companies are still working with these materials, but as many new materials like metal matrix composites have come into light, hence these new materials are taking a bit more importance.

The bulk nano-structured steels are already existing through the work of sir Harry Bhadeshia, this is also called as super bainitie, where the retained austenite and the ferrite plates are of 1nm size in the microstructure. This bulk nano structured was purely produced by thermodynamics and without any special thermo mechanic processing and using very lean composition. The extraordinary toughness and high strength of these steels find it potential in armor application. But there are certain problems are associated with welding of these steels.
