To start with, which commercial software are you using for this study ? Depending on which the approach could be different. For example, if you are using ICEPAK then it allows to import actual CAD with copper traces and all, hence your modeling with thickness would be very realistic in terms of geometry. At the same time if you are using Fluent, the thickness model would come with effective properties or you would go with multiple shell conduction models to match close to reality.

Thank you for your answer. I am using Cradle CFD for this analysis (scStream module). Please do not think only for PCB parts, I consider all electronic parts like PLC, UPS, fuse, switch, lever etc... So generally we have the information about heat generation, dissipation of them. But I don't know anything about their inside, its blackbox.
