In a splendid review published in Pediatr Nephrol (2017) 32:921-931 (attached below as pdf) the authors are stressing the pathophysiological mechanisms and the role of gut microbiota in triggering and progressing the CKD among other pathologies as DM or Hypertension.
As possible therapeutic tolls probiotics, synbiotics as well as fecal transplantaton are listed.

Probiotic therapy is in its infancy. I have been following my gut microbiome through a company called uBiome (start-up at Stanford University). (https://ubiome.com/about-us) So far they have been pooling all of the data and report what percentile my sample is compared to the general population (last time it was in the 18th percentile). I also reports the balance of fermicutes to bacteroides, and if I possess unique microorganisms where little is known. Their mission is to explore important research questions about the microbiome and to develop reliable, precision products and services focused on the microbiome. Several major universities are using their data. I have answered about 10 different health surveys which asked questions about kidney disease, and other chronic problems. They recently got FDA approval to sell their diagnostic services to physicians and bill to the patient's insurance. Since I am in the pilot, I will not know how my insurance company will handle this diagnostic test until they send me an explanation of benefits document. I would love to be in a fecal transplantation study as I have worked hard on my lifestyle (weight loss, plant-based diet, fermented foods, etc.) with little results. My genome and epigenome are likely important in determining the diversity of my gut bacteria (epstein barr virus, Lyme, celiac disease, and nephrolithiasis). Harvard is looking at genomic and microbiome data in collaboration with PI Dr. George Church. Stanford University is studying chronic oral antibiotic use on the gut microbiome in acne and rosacea patients. I would love to study the use of soluble corn fiber and the microbiome. I have recently started taking the prebiotic "Nutriose" (soluble corn fiber) daily as it improves bone density. It greatly improved my GI function. Now I'd like to know how my gut bugs have responded.
