You might want to look at the recent changes to the Canadian Divorce Act which provides that the sole criterion to be applied in parental disputes is the best interests of the child. Although the governing criterion of the best interests of the child has been long established in Canadian law, the federal Divorce Act, which is mirrored in many Canadian provincial statutes, the recent statutory changes provide a list of relevant factors to be taken into consideration in determining the best interests of a child. Equally, or perhaps more importantly, the recent legislation strongly encourages the use of alternatives to litigation, including collaborative family law, principled negotiation, mediation, med-arb and arbitration.These changes do not, of course, eliminate high conflict parental disputes triggered by family violence or parental alienation.

I think there is general imbalance in the system of family dynamics as a result of separation. Most often in Nigeria, the children from such family out layers tend to always bond with their mother rather than going with their father. The reason for this is also far fetch as children tend to be more knitted to their mother than the father. However, fathers should be given full rights to the custody of their children as most mothers do have really have the total will power and other resources to adequately cater for the needs of their children.
