Don't have any papers to share, just personal experience. As Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis for a midsized Public Company and CFO for a Private Company, motivation depends upon the Individual. Not all Individuals will be motivated by the same means.

Some as myself are motivated by autonomy and creativity within myself more than money.

Nearly all Professionals that I have dealt with are motivated by Autonomy. That is the only thing I have seen that is common among Professionals during my time in the Corporate World.

Now I am 61 years old. And the younger generation from what I have seen are not as motivated by intellectual endeavors in the workplace. They are more motivated by working in groups of like minded people. Which of course may not always provide the optimum solution.

This is an Hypothesis that would have to be tested, if not done already.

In the last two decades the motivation literature grow significantly having several applications in psychology, education, sociology, and management. In management alone, there are over 27 motivational theories. The current economic situation, dominated by COVID-19 motivation increases its importance and meaning. Therefore, I believe your focus is opportune, depend how you formulate the research question.
