For macroscopic changes in the relative size of brain regions, sizes can be estimated from the apparent cross sectional area as measured from images of the dorsal or ventral surface of the brain. Cross sectional areas can provide a more realistic estimate of region size as compared to the ellipsoid model, which tends to overestimate volume.
