The fruit of Punica granatum is considered to be berry-like (although it was referred as irregularly dehiscent capsule in Roth 1977 and other sources). But P. granatum is completely cultivated species for its eaten seeds. P. protopunica is a wild species and it is supposed to have more primitive characters of the flower and fruit. It is interestingly for me, if P.protopunica has a fruit that is more similar to the rest of Lythraceae – superior dehiscent capsule. Is it open irregularly, circular or longitudinally, septicidal or loculicidal. Does anybody know any references of this fact or have his own observations?
