We're all faced by that figure 😤 but personally, I always try to give him/her a chance to express his/herself thus I could know what the solution is !!
Each day, I try my best to guide them. I make lessons fun and interesting, and do whatever I can guide them to perform well. I celebrate every achievement of my students I give praise and rewards for improvements.
A committee might need to be set up to look into the issue. There's nothing wrong if those friends and students close to him are involved. They will be able to obtain and explain possible reasons for his actions. Some people like that needs some psychotherapy and behavioral change. Some have family issues, be it financial, poor home training or sudden loss of love ones that is affecting them psychologically
He/she might also need to be approached directly and gently to get more information on what he needs. Some were forced by parents to read/ study a particular course or subject against personal wish. Some doesn't like the study environment or not just used to it.
His or Her problems can definitely be solved if handled with wisdom.
Every question I am asking here is intended to raise an important general topic for the purpose of discussion and expressing opinion .. Greetings to you and your opinions.
If a student evades the lecture there should be a specific reason why the feel towards it this way. Sometimes, you can’t figure out “why” right away, but if you get the sense that a student is not really engaging with the lecture and is hating it, you could create a competitive atmosphere. But competitive in a way where they don’t feel over pressured and stressed, we don’t want our actions to backfire on us. Instead make it like a challenge on who answers quickly or you can bring some tricky questions that seem hard but they’re actually easy and see who is able to solve it. On a side note too, the professor should also be flexible; treating them with a harsh strict manner will never work to encourage the student, you can be flexible but at the same time strict and organized (again, as aforementioned, when I mean strict I mean not being biased but pushing your students to work harder and show them their potential). Last but not least, you could talk to the student and ask if you could help in any way.

Dear Dr. I completely agree with Dr. Faraed Salman . It depends upon the context and try to understand the issue in various angles. Carrot and stick approach - is recommended and only the concerned teacher is in good position to use punishment or reward - as suitable strategy to manage this situation (and not this student). Dr Faraed Salman is right in describing this situation as competitive atmosphere. Warm regards Yoganandan G
I think that the solution is based on various steps including thorough revision and criticism of the entire issue including the teacher's approach towards students, lecture's content and way of presenting lecture. The feedback of students is critical in this regard.

One of the methods that I have found to work, is redirection and teacher self-regulation to the student. Use the student's preferred topics or tasks to engage the student back into the classroom's material and proceed to finding out where is the student's cognitive stance at the moment. Once the teacher is aware of the student's mood or reason for being out of focus, then proceed to interval positive reinforcements while giving the student breaks. It is important to consider the student's well being and this includes their mindset. How are they doing with their thoughts? Are they having a foggy or cloudy day? Or could be they are frustrated about other things? Logging off could be a way to escape or avoid activities, which can be frustrating from a teacher's perspective considering the online platform. However, it is not about control but rather understanding. Children are not to be blamed for their behavior, rather we should try to find understanding or tools in ways to engage them to achieve the task at hand.
You spotted an issue with great importance. Especially now during the global pandemic of COVID-19. Agility to recognize the reasons behind the behavior is key and ability to address the problem:

For this, the teacher must be a qualified teacher. Who passed the appropriate training program. In general, pedagogical skill comes over the years. Young teachers often find themselves in such situations.
I had my school education in Kolkata, India. I studied in a legendary school whose name was there in the Guinness Book. At that time it used to be the largest school in the world with more than 16,000 students. Today also it is one of the largest schools in the world. The name of this school is "South Point High School". The founder of this school was a legendary Indian educationist, Late Shatikanta Guha. He was always of the opinion that when you have a bad and inattentive student in the class, she/ he should never be thrown outside the class. This is because if that student is thrown outside the classroom, then her/ his objectives of not listening to the teacher's lecture are met. Instead, that student should be forced to sit inside the classroom. Even when she/ he is inattentive, then also at least 1% of the lecture should enter her/ his ears. And, we all know that 1% is greater than "0".
Till date, I follow this idea that was given to me by my first Principal and the legendary, Late Shatikanta Guha.
Very beginning should have to address the students' problem, then will take initiative to solve the arising issue. Students and teachers relation always should be amicable. I think, teacher is the source of inspiration of their beloved students.
