The seriousness of the ecological crisis creates major new philosophical and scientific global challenges. What can you suggest? What is your response?
Hello James Des Launriers, I fear you may be wrong to say that there are 'more people that the earth can support', because the earth may not be able to support even a single greedy!
I think, the greed and selfishness of the powerful individualist minority (both in the poor and rich countries) is responsible for the mess on the earth!
The pathetic fate of ignorant people in the poor populous countries is not the sufficient reason to say that excess of population is the main problem of the earthly mess there or the less population size in the developed world is the reason for the environmental care or cleanliness found in such societies!
Mahatma Gandhi once truly said "the earth has enough resources to meet everybody's need, but not enough to meet anybody's greed"
Agricultural analysis of food production says " five kilogram of grains are required to make a kilogram of meet!"
So if people had led a simple life style, the soils should not have been so intensively manipulated to not only of its utter degradation, but that of water, air, food and all of the environmental components!
In the above context, there is a challenge in the philosophy for humans to find a wise answer to certain significant questions: 'Why don't people change their faulty lifestyle?' 'Why don't people care the needy?', Why don't people worry about future generations?' and the like.
If people properly understood ecological philosophy, they would have changed their attitudes and found reasonable answers to the above questions and would have solved the environmental crisis!
Rather, people want to keep away such ecosophical questions from science as 'spiritual' matters!
The challenge of ecology is to reasonably equip people to bother about the ecological basis of the same and to find out true answers to such questions!
Ecology is a moral science too! Ecology enables humans to find answers to the ultimate of good and bad in all individual actions on the earth!
Eco-spirituality is a scientific theme that require proper scientific attention, rational analysis and criticism!
It doesn't happen, because the irrational individualist who rule the current world always ignorantly behave as if "to be in darkness is so easy, but to get exposed in light is difficult and painful an experience" that prompt them to sacrifice the existing physical comforts!
Actually, lack of awareness or false beliefs are responsible for philosophical challenges to affect the ecology. Today need is that the scientific research centers or and scientific institutes make camping in villages to aware the people. Tell those that how to preserve our environment. Implements in preserving forest and make reforestation and rehabilitation.
Hello Antonio; There are only two problems that bedevil us. 1. There are more people than the Earth can support. We know how to fix that in a humane way. 2. Free market capitalism is unsustainable. A revised economic model is an immediate necessity. All else emerges from those two. Best regards, Jim Des Lauriers

Hello RG collegues. I fully suport Joseph George Ray opinion. The ecological crisis must be approached both scientifically and ethically. One man's greed has a negative effect on the environment, just like the Butterfly effect.
I agree it is both a philosophical and scientific challenge; one of a parabolic mirror. This parabolic mirror reflects the thinking, context, connection and the relevance to life and society where one must begin to understand that “Man is not the centre of the universe, nor is the universe built in his image, but he is part of the over-riding order which constitutes the universe” (Szabo, 2017).
Britta Boyer, Yes, 'Man is not the center of the universe', but can we think of a universe without humans?
Is it not quite Utopian to consider nature without the human influence and control? Because humans have already become the centre of the biosphere. and will remain there till the species get extinct!
Therefore the human effort is to keep the balance of nature for own sustenance as the center of the universe!
The problems in the biosphere is not because of a human centered view of the universe, but because of the mistakes in the conceptualization of that view.
The great Russian Scientist Vernadsky who coined the concept of Biosphere also viewed the biosphere as a sphere of life under the control of human cognitive power, which he named as the 'noosphere'. Biosphere has become quite inseparable from the noosphere!
So the error that we see in the biosphere is because of the error in the noosphere! Therefore, to correct the mistakes in the biosphere we need to correct those in the noosphere first.
The noosphere remains contradictory and conflict driven!
The problems of the biosphere will be over only when human science attain the capability to analyze the issues of the noosphere and become capable of inculcating the necessary values or ethical content within the noosphere - in all individual human interactions in nature!
