Im learning about TGA, can someone explain in simple terminology the reasons for the difference in thermal behaviour exhibited by the same polymer in different conditions?
Im looking to understand why the polymer behaves differently in oxygen as compared to n2?

As TGA is the study of the thermal stability of your polymer, performing under N2 and O2 atmospheres is different. In fact, if you perform TGA under N2, which is an inert gas, your polymer may seem more stable than if you perform your analysis under oxygen, which is an oxidant gas that, under heating, can degrade your polymer faster than under N2. Generally, it is good to perform both analyzes: one under N2 in order to study the thermal stability under inert conditions and one under oxygen to see if your polymer can handle drastic conditions.

Since Nitrogen is an inert gas thus doesn't effect the polymer 's stability while Oxygen may oxidizes the polymer or may alter the degradation profile thats why Nitrogen is used to perform TGA
using different atmosphere in TGA experiment will also change the mechanism of polymer degradation. also in real-life condition oxygen is present and that is why it is important to have your TGA carried out under both gases.
