Salmonella spp causes Typhoid fever & gastroenterits. Both are transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food. Typhoid fever is a systemic invasion - bacteremia followed by colonisation of bacteria in liver, spleen , bone marrow , intestines & mesenteric lymph nodes , runs a prolonged course. Gastroenteritis is a localised infection of the intestines and of short duration. The commonest serovar causing enteric fever is S.typhi. Others are S.paratyphi A & B.
