However, it does not identify the best strategies. you can use MCDM for that.

Things evolve and take on different meanings and applications in different contexts. The same applies to the LCAG (Learned, Christensen, Andrews & Guth) Model, now known as SWOT. Its original intention, I believe, was to bring balance in strategic analysis and formulation.
In its original form, apart from the SWOT part, which were classified into two (2) boxes, there are other two (2) boxes were about aligning "personal values" within the firm, with societal values and expectations outside the firm.
Some elements of this matrix evolved into the (SCP) - Structure, Conduct, Performance and some of the more recent renditions such as as "The 5 Forces," PESTEL on the external environment and RBV (Resource Based View) in the internal environment of the firm.
