There was a democratic vote today in Switzerland which will restrict the immigration of foreigners, even those from the surrounding EU, where Switzerland is not part of, but has some easy regulation. I wonder if - and perhaps how - this will change the scientific world in Switzerland. Although I once worked in Switzerland (for almost no money) I can fully understand that such a small and highly attractive country with meanwhile 23% of foreigners makes a democratic decision to better regulate an increasing immigration. One argument of the industry might be they need cheap foreigners, or specialists otherwise not easily available in each field.

this is a typical case of disinformation and populisme.. but if they want so, should they go for their experiment.
nobody likes globalisation.. so it is OK to try to stop it.. switzerland can do it, since they live from their banking secrecy.. and this is what we should boykott if they boykot us.
but who is so stringent with its own principle.. ah, moral.. where have you gone.
it is really strange to follow how our cultures are getting undermined by new technologies, or in other word:
how fast old traditions fall appart, how difficult it is to enjoy the new ones,
how easy it is to fear the new, how believed security (tradition) is creating heat.

I think at least sometimes a highly diverse group of scientists can achieve more than a group with almost identical background, although a potential for interpersonal conflicts could be bigger in the first group of different people. Many academic settings allow and promote an international mixture of different people in the lab, english is the main language, but there usually is more diversity in the US than in european labs, including Switzerland. I wonder if Switzerland will now (or in 3 years) suffer from a decreasing number of international students and postdocs, or if science will then become even more attractive for swiss students.
