Hi Everyone, Just wondering what's the best way to carry out the XRD of a surface of a 5mm thick round bar. Since the sample has to be flat for XRD analysis, the round surface may introduce errors/peak shifts etc. I would highly appreciate your tips/suggestions

I solved a similar problem some time ago. The aim was to determine the phase composition of oxidation products on steel bar surface (approx. 10 mm diameter). I had the sample cut into about 50 mm pieces and measured it directly from the surface (backed with plasticine). Using the line focus of the tube (in parallel with the stretching of the sample) and the beam shading (approx. 0.3 mm at 45o 2 theta CuKa), it was quite good to measure and evaluate. It is necessary to have a very well-adjusted device and it is necessary to take into account that it is measured for a very long time. The geometry of the sample changes the shape of the peaks rather than their position.
On the other hand, I don't know what your goal is. A rod with a diameter of 1/2 cm can always be cut, poured into epoxy and ground into a plane.

as I understood, Rajeev Roychand wants to investigate the surface of the cylindrical rod by XRD, but not the bulk region....
'oxidation products on steel' is the buzz word above; and that means surface investigation.
But another idea:
A slight grinding/polishing *) of the surface could help. The resulting powder has to be used for powder XRD. So you will get rid of preferred orientation artifacts.
But I must admit, that this procedure will be not a 'nondestructive' test.
But on the other hand a thickness controlled grinding over some steps will give you the possibility to get depth informations on the presence of the oxidation products.
