Suggest some good coupling agent/treatment type for basalt fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite without compromising Impact property. Generally, there is a decrease in notched Izod impact strength reported by many researchers on incorporating basalt fiber.
Basalt fibers are very different from glass (silicon dioxide) fibers used in Bulk Molding Compound and FRP. You can't use a coupling agent to fix this, because that affects adhesion of the fibers to the polymer matrix, with notched izod test you are fracturing the fiber itself, not breaking interfacial adhesion.
Basalt normally consists of this mixture of minerals:
Basalt generally has a composition of 45–52 wt% SiO2, 2–5 wt% total alkalis, 0.5–2.0 wt% TiO2, 5–14 wt% FeO and 14 wt% or more Al2O3. Contents of CaO are commonly near 10 wt%, those of MgO commonly in the range 5 to 12 wt%.

Fiber glass fibers are almost always close to 100% Silicon Dioxide, all the different ingredients in Basalts like described above will decrease izod fracture strength. Because the basalt fiber breaks easier!
Thanks, Dr. Douglass, for answering this question, although I agree with your point. However, some of the findings suggested that using an impact modifier with a base matrix may increase the impact strength. What's your opinion on this suggestion.
