Please someone help me out with the per day calorie consumption for Male, Sprague dawley rats. It would be really helpful if any particular equation on calorie requirement could be shared by someone.
Dear Anmol,
In order to calculate the caloric (energy) intake you need to know the energy provided by the rat chow (feed) which your using, e.g. 3020 kcal/kg, (it can be easily available from your laboratory animal chow (feed) supplier.
After getting this value you have to measure the daily food intake of the individual SD rats.
Caloric Intake(Kcal/g/day) = Daily food intake (gm) * total energy food of (kcal/kg)/1000
From caloric intake you can calculate the Feed Efficiency Ratio
Feed Efficiency Ratio (FER) = Mean Body Weight Gain / Caloric intake

No there is no standards figure and values for the above.
Depending upon the age, body weight and disease state such as metabolic disease these value get changed.
In experimental pharmacology these serves as a dietary parameters which are compared between control, diseased and therapeutic group.
My rodent maintenance diet chow offers ME of 2500KCal/kg.Howmuch calorie should a healthy SD rat of 200gm consume to consider the rat is eating well n is suitable for further studies??

There is a reference in the paper. It was done through histo-pathological study by isolation of rat abdominal fat pads.
Abhijit Nirwane I saw in your paper the control group had developed a body weight from 65-95gm to 221 +_ 5 after 61 days of treatment and observed u have mentioned daily calorie uptake to be around 41 Kcal/day/rat. Since I am using the same pranav lab chow feed please tell me whether u are happy with the palatability of the product by SD rats.
