Are there any studies on the antecedents of emotional competence or emotional intelligence in adulthood? I mainly find studies on children or adolescents or intervention studies.
Hi Martin, Maybe it's hard to find studies of emotional intelligence in early childhood because that label isn't how we usually talk about the Developmental Psychology roots of competence with emotions. Some of the earliest studies of temperament show infants' fearful responses to novelty predict later social inhibition. Preschoolers’ emotion regulation, like delay of gratification, predicts self-esteem and social skills in adolescence. And as children grow, they develop more understanding of the causes of particular emotions. I hope these concepts help with your literature search! ~ Katie
Temperament: e.g., Thomas, Chess, & Birch, 1968
Emotion Regulation: e.g., Mischel et al, 1988; Peake et al, 1990; Ayduck et al, 2000
Thank you, Madeline! I am looking for influencial factors resp. antecedents in adulthood. I am not restricted to the term "intelligence" but also want to include research on "competence".
