Why do you want to replace one for another? You can work on both softwares according to your needs. Both have user friendly environment and command window.

Gretl (and Stata) have one considerable advantage over EVIEWS. When you enter a series of commands through the GUI the corresponding command-line commands can be saved, amended if necessary and the commands reused and re-run. This is particularly important if you need to produce your programs so that your analysis can be replicated. Some academic journals and internal auditors in some organizations insist that this be done. In EVIEWS you can of repeat your analysis using the variant of the TSP (Time Series Processor) command language provided with Eviews).

If you are interested in general statistics in addition to econometrics STATA would be a good choice. Thomas Dimpfl has recommended R and I would agree with him if you intend to do serious statistics. It does take a bit of learning.

Thank you so much for your recommendations. I had some information about Gretl but I think I will learn both Gretal and R in order to be more flexible in research. Thank you.

Eviews' output are easier to read compared to Stata. Stata output is a bit detailed and messy.

Both software can do similar things but Stata is more general like SPSS which can be used for latent variable modelling as well.

R is great because of the voluminous amount of research and data freely available but requires ability to apply modelling skills, not user friendly.

Hi Ibrahim,

The difference depends on the individual. Some researchers prefer using eviews for time series analyises and stata for cross-sectional analyses.

Stata and Eviews are both Econometric softwares but Stata is best for panel analysis while Eviews is best for time series analysis.

Go to Stata or R. The former is much easier, while the second one is probably more flexible and powerful but the learning curve is much steeper.

Stata is an easy to use with both dropdown menus and prompt commands. Stata is better for panel data analysis and has superior graphics. Additionally, it has a very powerful documentation with 15000 pages that can help you with every command. I do recommend Stata and please follow their youtube channel for easy transition.

Dear Ibrahim Niftiyev, the data analysis in Eviews is easier as compare to Stata. If you want to apply different econometric techniques in your research, then I will suggest you to use the Eviews.

It depends on the analysis you want to do. I occasionally use Stata for some bit of analyses that needed panel data design. Buh I prefer Eviews when I am carrying out time series analysis. Stata can do Time series analysis, though. Any of the packages is strong until you get to some very specific analysis.
