Hello to every one,

Let's assume I've measured something on 3 different subjects once every month. I can calculate the standard deviation and report it on each date of measurement (please find attached a graph).

But let's say I'm interested in reporting the general mean regardless of the time

  • There is no difference if I calculate the mean starting from the mean of each year (red highlights) or from all the observed data (blue highlights)
  • But there is a big difference if calculate its standard deviation from the mean of each year (red circles)or from all the observed data (blue highlights)

So, what is the correct procedure? I think the answer is "it depends". But then on what it actually depends?

(PS: I'm not interested in any statistical test, I just want to represent the data dispersion). correctly

Thank you!
