Speciation means different form of a contaminants. Each form may have different intensity of toxicity. Some species of a single chemical contaminate may be very harm ful but other may be harm les. Chemical speciation modeling is used in the study of water-rock interactions in groundwater systems. It generally means how close the system is towards checmial equlibrium between the rock and the solution-groundwater in question. In  the study of hydrothermal systems it even gives an estimate of deep temperature through the use of checmial geothermometry.

It is therefore very significant in groundwater studies.
