Chemical speciation modeling is used in the study of water-rock interactions in groundwater systems. It generally means how close the system is towards checmial equlibrium between the rock and the solution-groundwater in question. In the study of hydrothermal systems it even gives an estimate of deep temperature through the use of checmial geothermometry.
