River linking may be effective in the following aspects:

  • Additional water for irrigation,  domestic and industrial sectors,
  • New hydro-power projects,
  • Flood control,
  • Water for water-scarce rivers,
  • New routes of communication (water paths),
  • Sufficient water for groundwater recharge etc.
  • But, there are also opinions against river-linking. Because, a river-linking project certainly will disturb the natural courses of linked rivers. So, in the long run, this type of project may not of beneficial.

In which countries the river-linking projects have been executed ? Are they facing any environmental problems?
