An interesting topic for a special issue...

It is a topic of paramount importance for Mediterranean countries and it would be interesting if economic and international trade issues related to olive oil can also be included. My suggestion would be to consider also manuscripts that go beyond the strict agronomic perspective.

Dear Carlos Rodríguez-Monroy, yes, thank you for your interest, we will consider all issues related to Olive production and climate change aspects. Including economic trade issues.

Helder Fraga Dear Helder, as an academic, but also as a small-scale producer of olive oil, I am very sensitive to all issues related to the supply chain and my desire is that this special issue achieves successful goals by covering all the relevant aspects. In particular, I believe that attention should be paid to potential threats, like those derived from the expansion of Xilella Fastidiosa which has been so damaging in several countries.

Dear Carlos thank you for your input. These types of potential threats are exactly what we are looking for.

We are working on some ideas around this topic and hope to produce a manuscript in a not-too-distant future. I still think that it is the right moment to have a fresh look at Mediterranean olive oil, especially now considering the effects of the pandemic. I wish you all the best with this special issue.

Olive trees of Italian and Spanish cultivars are cultivated for oil production. Also, it is suffering the effects of climate change. En Chile dese los años '60 del siglo pasado se están usando para control de diversas plagas como Conchuela Negra del Olivo Saissetia oleae (Olivier) y otras conchuelas, usando e parasitoides y depredadores. ...mediante control biológico, trabajo hecho.por investigadores del INIA.(Ripa y Rodríguez, 1999).

Estimado Hugo, Muchas gracias por la información de las plagas del olivo e Chile. Veo que difieren de las nuestras que le resumo a continuación:

Mosca del olivo (Bactrocera oleae), Barrenillo (Phoeotribus scarabeoides), Prays del olivo (Prays Oleae), Algodón del olivo (Euphyllura olivina), Cochinilla de tizne (Saissetia oleae).

Es posible que algunas de estas plagas se den solo en la cuenca mediterránea. Espero que nunca lleguen a Chile. Un cordial saludo.

Lo saludo y por suerte en Chile no tenemos las pestes (plagas y enfermedades) que afectan al olivo y otros frutales, que usted menciona quie están en la cuenca Mediterránea. Tenemos eso sí a la Cochinilla de tizne (Saissetia oleae), conocida en Chile como Conchuela del olivo, la cual es de baja incidencia, ya que está muy bien controlada mediante control biológico. .

Yo en la década del '80 del siglo pasado junto a un equipo de Fundación Chile fui co-responsable del renacimiento de la industria parar obtención de aceite de oliva trayendo a Chile variedades italianas,de las cuales hubo un largo proceso de cuarentena (confinamiento), previo a su propagación, difusión y escalamiento comercial.// En forma paralela lo hizo Agromillora Catalana estableciendo una filial en Chile con las variedades españolas.

Así al cabo, de 30 años existe en Chile una incipiente industria de aceite de oliva, con productos de calidad (extra virgen)..

Las variedades(cultivares) italianas de olivo introducidas en 1987 con validación, zonificación y validación comercial para aceite fueron: Bossana; Coratina, Frantoio, FS-17 ®, I-77; Leccino, Manzanilla; Nociara, Nocelara de Belice. Actividad mandatada por Fundación Chile con colaboración del Dr. Giuseppe Fontanazza, director del Istituto di Ricerche sulla Olivicoltura, en Perugia. Dicha actividad fue precursora para la formación de Chile Oliva que permitió revalorizar y consolidar la industria oleícola entre la III y VIII Regiones de Chile (Región de Atacama hasta la Región del Maule,. 1200 km de norte a sur).
