It is said that the array efficiency of sparse antenna arrays, obtained by thinning is high but with my studies it depends upon the no of left over elements.
Hence it is even lesser than amplitude tapered arrays.
I want to put forward one discussion that how important the taper efficiency is for active phased arrays as it can be used as a figure f merit for designing dense as well as sparse phased array antennas with low sidelobe level.
I request researchers to put forward their opinion and observations.
As you know that the array efficiency decreases (the Gain of antenna array is smaller) when tapered. So it's a trade-off. But side-lobes can be nasty, the operations that are prone to jamming, or aiming low/no multi-path can sacrifice a little gain to reduce the side-lobes. So it depends on the application if required then tapering efficiency should be high.
