In the modern academic landscape, scholars are increasingly entangled in a web of global commercialized networks, akin to what Max Weber described as the "Iron Cage" of rationalization. These networks, including ResearchGate, Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and JSTOR, ostensibly serve as platforms for knowledge dissemination and scholarly communication. However, beneath the surface lies a covert mechanism that transforms academic freedom into a form of intellectual servitude. what do you think?
I do not think it is the platforms that generate these mechanisms. It is the way academic systems validate and promote publications as a measure of succcess. Impact in real life should be equally important. Although they might br correlates, tgey nay bnot always are.
I agree with Vania Ceccato that the problem lies not in the platforms. Instead, stakeholders like university administrations wish to get simple numbers (the number of citations, the number of publications in high-ranking journals, the h-index etc.) to evaluate researchers, instead of doing a complex analysis when it comes to promotion, financing etc. This is a misuse of bibliometrics that was developed to study science, not individual scientists. No of publication, citation, name of journal, hi index no.? Are these should be only look out or to be asked for? Publication which adds relief to the world, humanity serving, novel, fundamental scattering light of knowledge pertaining to new equation is worth mentioning everywhere. Those are to be counted only.
