In the wake of food insecurity and malnutrition all over, is the use of SCP (Single cell protein) gaining popularity or is it still unacceptable to use microorganisms as food? I know microbes like yeasts and mushrooms are used commonly as food and feed supplements, but what about bacteria, algae and other fungal organisms? These cells multiply fast, independently of climatic factors and accumulate huge amounts of proteins. What are the cons and pros of using SCP as food? Are there any practical examples of where and how they are used?
