I am still looking for simulation models or submodels that combine plant/vegetation growth with herbivore grazing on these plants. I aim at using it for an MSc course on the use of models in ecology.
Hi Huub, try contacting the people at Simulistics in Edinburgh - they may have a model of the type you're looking for, or know someone who has one that you could use:
Huub, it is possible that a kick start to your solution is by reading the American Naturalist: "On Plants and Herbivores" by S. J. McNaughton.
It may only depend on how you intend to describe your model, either mathematically, verbally and any other form, you may wish to use. Also this paper gives clear insights to the solution.: "How can net Primary Productivity be Measured in Grazing Ecosystems?" S. J. McNaughton, D. G. Milchunas and D. A. Frank. It is still from your developed insights that your interest models are novel in the sense.
Maybe you could find information with studies like the Paris simulator made by INRA in Auvergne (France) : http://www.journees3r.fr/IMG/pdf/2002_modelisation_04_Beaumont.pdf.
In South Africa we are trying to restore succulent thicket, a favorite grazing habitat for large mammals (Kudu, Elephant, Rhino), so research coming our of Rhodes University or Nelson Mandela University might help. Key authors are Kerley, Cowling or Sigwela.
