The "Academic Phrasebank" (http://www.phrasebank.manchester.ac.uk/) is an online resource to find inspiration and help when writing academic essays. It provides many examples of phrases regarding the introduction of terms, citing, reporting results, etc. I wonder if someone knows of a similar resource in Spanish language, particularly something useful for my undergrad students, who are now struggling with the writing of their diploma dissertations.

Why don't you give the "Academic Phrasebank" to Google Translate, and then refine by hand?
@Debra, indeed the paper seems intriguing. I will follow up. Thanks. @Ian that is a very good suggestion that hadn't really crossed my mind! Maybe some students could tackle it. Thanks to you too.
As Dr. Ian Kennedy commented, I advised my students to use google translate but they must double check the results and make corrections manually because some words, especially scientific terms, are not translated correctly. It was very helpful in English - Arabic translation.

I am in favor of this kind of resource, but I believe it should reflect the heritage of the writer's own language, not that of English.
The question is, should writing and editing choices made in one language be influenced by translated phrase patterns and frequencies in another language?
The Academic Phrasebank is a resource based on (P.4) 'recurrent phraseological patterns in a large text corpus of written English.' The corpus is taken from authentic academic sources (postgraduate dissertations and academic articles from many disciplines). According to the introduction, the basis for selection of a phrase included its having:
• a useful communicative purpose in academic text
• collocational or formulaic elements in it
• generic content words
• a natural sound to a native speaker or writer of English
A similar Spanish language resource would be one developed by drawing from a corpus of Spanish language academic writing to find recurrent phrases that met similar criteria, particularly the naturalness of the phrase in Spanish.
Running the phrasebank through translation software and refining the results by hand (as has been suggested) would yield an unbalanced resource. It would contain phrases in Spanish which may or may not be recurrent in Spanish academic literature.
I am not sure that would do justice to the richness and depth of the language or serve the academic interest of those who were working in it. A translated phrasebook could be a starting point, but there is the danger that the user would end up with 'Englishified' Spanish academic writing.

An English phrasebook is merely to get started quickly. Then someone needs to scan and scour academic papers and theses for common and useful Spanish phrases! Then the fun starts!
