Often, we are so involved in work, especially in the field of science, that jobless holidays seem hard to come by. Is thinking about work and partial involvement into work during the holiday, especially when traveling abroad, is appropriate and useful?
In fact, work can be continue, without any rest, when you have a motivation, especially for a mental job.
I do not agree because this means that you did not plan well to complete your work tasks during the day except to respond to important e-mail, but some professions such as medicine may require a doctor to cut his vacation to save a human life

If the job is not a labor of love, it is natural and better for one's health and mind to forget of it during a vacation time. Otherwise, it is recommended as well, but paradoxically vacation time in many cases is a more comfortable environment for work than the usual working place.
With age and growing seniority and responsibility levels, the work place requires participation in more meetings, conferences, personal email communications, and alike.
An opportunity to cast away those responsibilities, and focus on main strategic key interests requiring sort of a high brain concentration, is sometimes becoming a vacation time.
I am really not sure of this! Actually, ideally we should not but I have had to do this so many times, that I am contradicting myself! It is not advisable at all, to work while on vacation!

This means having coworkers to back you up while you're out and setting some grounds rules with your boss so that you're not getting called constantly to deal with work-related emergencies. Though doing some work on vacation might be a reasonable concession, it shouldn't become a given. So if you're going to do it, go about it wisely.
For me, even while on vacation, i sometimes still work as my superiors or team might need certain information or stuff from me. I always have my laptop with me and choose what tasks to respond to based on urgency and availablility of skilled personnel required to accomplish such tasks.

Why should anybody work while on vacation? What is than the purpose of vacation????,
Vacation is for friends and family. Routine activities/ job related activities may be avoided during vacation. There should be a challenge.
I think it can actually be great to work while one is on vacation, obviously with limits.
Please do not mix up things. During a lifetime we do several works simultaneously. For example, we have our work to get an income, we grow children, we have friends, we care for the elderly and especially our parents, and so many more. Vacation is a job with our family and have to do it well. Work is a job and we have to do it well in the office. Do not pretend that you have a lot to do with one job to avoid the responsibility of another. This is not a characteristic of clever people.

I guess ir depends on a situation. There may be urgent situations, when you have something to finish ir fix, but I think it useful during holiday to forget Your work and to come back with new, fresh, usually out of the box ideas :)
