Happy New Year! Like every year 2018 began in Germany and other European countries with gigantic, earsplitting fireworks, apparently happiness (nearly) overall, only some fire workers lost their life, some houses got fire damages, some participants of the fire party were heavily hurt by other (often unknown) people, some had only the unlucky fate to lose an arm or a leg. Millions of Euros were, like every year, pushed through the chimney. An old custom today is practiced in an exorbitant manner. Is this justified? Is there a societal learning process conceivable? I think, in no way, but you may have a different view. Please, let me know!
Actually many Chinese cities once adopted this policy and forbade fireworks inside the cities during lunar new year, which is the biggest holiday in China. After many years' practice, that policy was later repealed. It appears very difficult to curb people's desire to celebrate the biggest holiday with fireworks.
Thank you for your answers, dear colleagues! Yes, my question included doubts that coercive measures are appropriate to decrease the mentioned problems. My interest regards self-learning processes in our modern society, no doubt that it is necessary to gain experience with several ways to reduce violence, hazard for human life, especially by (mass-) reactions of gangs and groups.
This is a problem of mass psychology in depth. I recommend to blow into the ram's horn (trumpet, shofar) at new year; can also make a lot of noise !
Most societal learning processes are subconscious; considering this psychoanalytical fact, you could be crucified for your proposal, with big fireworks celebrating your punishment.
thank you, Stephen, for your contribution. I agree, absolutely, with your nice proposal of transferring the problem in the musical field. In a little community this idea should be achievable. The local authorities purchase some attractive instruments, handing out them to volunteers half an hour before the New Year begins, organizing a common action of greeting the next year. I don't believe that this idea will work, but to make such proposal in a reader's letter of the local newspaper is to to consider, kind regards, Hein
