The use of workflow is not limited to only software applications. It should be included in every business process automation not limited to any domain. Even processes such as patent filing, PhD research thesis evaluation & submission, production, manufacturing, e-commerce, recruitment, cloud computing, embedded systems etc should facilitate the use of workflows.

It shouldn't be limited to only certain domains but it will be until we fix the problem of cross domain sharing. Workflows has data and applications (humans or machines) mashed up to create a result. By limiting to certain domains and even beyond this to certain machine languages or human languages we limit our abilities to adapt or drawing future solutions from modification or tweaking of our current workflows. Many times the solutions we seek are one off (one data source change or one application function change) in our workflow. These create new results in new data that can change our decisions.

As examples of currently open issues, existing workflow approaches still exhibit critical dependencies on a centralized enactment engine, and they lack flexibility in supporting the execution of long-running workflows with multiple iterations or even infinite iterations and allowing their structural and behavioral dynamic reconfiguration.
