When considering dynamic loads (induction motor loads) in an isolated microgrid, should the induction motors be directly connected to the grid, or should they be connected to the grid through an AC-AC converter?
It depends on the tasks. AC-AC converters (or variable frequency drives) have the ability to operate within certain supply voltage limits. In microgrids, voltage levels are highly dependent on load variation. Also, VFD's have built-in protections (overvoltages, overcurrents and etc.). On the other hand, a VFD is a highly non-linear load that causes many problems, especially in microgrids.
