I have noticed that the department of economics belongs to the college of business in some universities. However, the same department is not a part of college of business in some other universities, and the department is affiliated with other colleges such as college of arts and sciences or college of social science.
Based on the observation, should the department of economics belong to the college of business? Why is your answer yes or no? and what is your rational of your answer?
The question, though framed to be innocuous, has far reaching implications on various outcomes, however answered. At the institution where I am affiliated, the economics department is housed under the College of Liberal Arts in the School of Social Sciences along with Political Science and Social Science. Won't we agree, in the end where ever housed - what the students, the faculties and the researchers do and what they accomplish for the existential causes and weather or not those accomplishments bring wisdom to the humanities and the humanity ought to be a measure of that discipline?

I believe that there are practical reasons whether or not an university places the department of economic in the college of business. Isn't the kinds of question asked and the hypothesis proven or not that ought to determine their choices? Yes, I believe that main subject area and research methodology do play a role dividing disciplines. For example, many universities have an a law school that is separated from other colleges. Unlike researcher in social sciences, writers in the field of law as an academic discipline in general do not much rely on empirical methods (observation and statistical analysis). Instead, legal researchers commonly rely on logical argument.
If we move up the ladder of law and review the research on justice, don't we find lot more statistical analysis to evaluate, understand the impact of enforcement and call for actions based on such findings?
I primarily refer to law journals that have mostly been written by law professors and published in the United States, although some articles are written by non-law school professors such as professors and graduate students of sociology and criminology. You can take a look at any law journal in the US. But you can check Harvard Law Review for an example. Essay-type articles are much more popular than the ones with statistical analysis. I do not think that law schools in the US teach many statistics courses. I, however, strongly believe that such legal research have their own merits.

Doesn't the field of mathematics begin with logic and help structure our universe? Social sciences - including law - though begin with logic, likewise, structure everything else, in all likelihood.
Absolutely, you are right. Logic is very important for any disciplines. I am doing research in criminology, and I use both logic (theories) and observation (data collection and statistical analysis). In other words, I test if my logic and theories are supported by observation (data). I am just saying that legal research less rely on observation and statistical technique than many other social sciences such as sociology and political science, which makes legal studies in law journals are different from other disciplines that emphasize empirical studies. As a result, law school deserves its own place, which is distinct from other social sciences.

Economics is a social science. So ideally it should fall in the School or Faculty of Social Sciences. However, there is a connection with business and commerce because students taking a degree in business or commerce are also introduced to basic courses of economics.
