Both approaches are valuable and needed, but depending on the situation of the ethnic group you work with, validating their traditional knowledge may be more urgent. That is what I have encountered in the Colombian Amazon, working among indigenous people who are renowned for their expertise using medicinal plants. However, given their history and current pressures, I have found that validating their knowledge is more vital for them, as that can lead to their empowerment and hopefully the revitalization of their culture at threat. Many drugs have already been developed based on their traditional ecological knowledge, and while that has significantly helped the Western world, it has not helped indigenous people that much.
