I am studying leaf senescence kinetic in Arabidopsis thaliana. In the long-day condition (16h of illumination) and 100 umol s-1 m-2 light, the senescence progressed quickly. Then, I want to slow down this process. I am confusing between using the long-day condition (16h of illumination) + low light intensity (60-70 umol s-1 m-2 light) and the short-day condition (10h of illumination) + normal light intensity (100 umol s-1 m-2 light).
Any differences in A. thaliana development between two conditions?
Any advices about the growth condition?

In general, short day conditions certainly slow down development (time to flowering) but it could be ecotype/accession dependent. Some accessions with flower quickly regardless of the light regime, while others require long day or vernalization to flower. For Col-0 it takes ~3-4 weeks to flower in our growth facilities under LD (16h light~ 100-120 umol s-1 m-2), while this takes close to 8-10 weeks under SD conditions (8h light /v= umol s-1 m-2). I can't say anything conclusive about the light quantity and its effects on flowering time/senescence/development. Hope this helps you.
