Hi,I have done some post doc research on an instrument I developed for my PhD. The research has not been published and is now really old as it was done in 2006. I had submitted it to Psychology and Health, Patient Education and Counselling, BMC Health Services Research and Complementary and Alternative Medicine, but it's been always rejected so far. The feedback made it stronger though - I still believe the data works out rather well (i.e. in line with the model) and the conclusions are ok, but probably more of interest to a particular niche group of people in my field.
Would you recommend I give up on the idea of publishing it in a peer reviewed journal or just keep going? I put the article on my page for public review - let me know if you think it is worthwhile to keep pushing. If you think there is value, which journal do you think would take it and not charge me any money for processing it? Thank you for your time!
Never give up! I think the paper is interesting. To locate an appropriate journal, visit JANE: http://biosemantics.org/jane/index.php and paste your abstract into the search box.

interesting to see the answers and interesting question. I asked about some different data the other day and there was a thought that much beyond 3ish years was too long. However, i think the main thing is how valid you think the data still are. Then if you're honest about when collected and reflect on what might have changed then i think you're good.
I fully agree with Fiona and Ronan/Shane. If the dataset is still valid and worthwhile (i.e. reflecting and fitting the recent context), then please go on and try to get it published. I didn't know about JANE (excellent suggestion for my own manuscripts), but it can definitely be worthwhile to try. Many new (open access) journals are at hand.

Yes, never give up. Just a little story, a researcher published a multilevel paper with really old data 1980's or something. He got rejected 13 times until it got finally published. If your data is still valid and put a grain of sand to the world, go for it.

13 times!!! Ha - ok I won't give up then. I read the paper again last night and I think it is a bit too dense and the tables are not really reflecting where the true innovation is. So my plan is I will now look at the top suggestions from JANE - rewrite the article in the style remove the tables that are somewhat interesting but a little bit overkill - focus on the essence of the innovation and resubmit. Thanks for the pep talk everyone and hopefully in the not too distant future you will see this back on here.
I had to remove the draft version of the Bemi/ IPQ paper as your feedback encouraged me so much that I have now resubmitted to 'Psychiatric services' the fact that 82 people downloaded it - gave me a lot of confidence ... more than some of my publications....what is the true measure of success...???
Great and well done! The number of donwloads shows that people do have an interest in this. It would have been too early to give up... And it shows a good example (again) for other people to be confident to share their data and views with other people.
Hi just an update to the story. It was not sent for review for this and another journal, but is now under review. Hopefully this means good news. I am getting fed up with the reformatting though such a tedious activity. Cannot wait to hear the outcome of the submission.

I heard back from the Journal last week - they suggest this draft now fits better in a psychometric journal. I do not have time right now to update the material / rewrite it so uploaded /parked it here again for anyone who is interested and who wants to reference it somehow.
It has a nice patient journey for youth mental health services and table of the IPQ/ BEMI measurement components as well in this version now. I still have 5 more drafts to go until I am on 13 drafts so just a matter of time...

Ok I have been informed this paper is still downloaded a lot. So I am in 2 minds now - shall I leave it on here... and people can access it and or shall I still go for the print media. Decisions decisions... thoughts anyone? I think it is still one of the only papers that assesses the concept of helpfulness for patients when they use/try different help seeking approaches which other SRM have not so much focussed on as far as I know but I have not followed the publications as closely...

Well I think the dataset is good if it answers your question. If it would not answer your question then I think you should not use it. If someone else has got a newer data set then it could be interesting to see if your dataset could be used as replication. It may be harder to publish though. Best, Katja

Why not do it long-term, i.e., add a new part and compare it with the original.

It is already a prospective study and unfortunately the students all left university. But it would be cool to study the effect of beliefs regarding a medical condition over years, I agree. We are never static and the only constant is change... so it would be interesting to take snapshots every quarter or so.
If your data answered your research questions, and the topic remains timely I would recommend to continue and not to give up. Good luck!

I am also in the same situation and I am a fisheries professional. My data was taken in the period of 2015-16. can i hope for its publihshing?
