I'm reusing HeNe tube from optometric device as a single mode laser for metrology.

In the source device, tube was connected with a proper HV cable only to the anode. Cathode was connected to the ground with a standard copper yellow-green wire.

Every single externally-driven HeNe laser I saw had 2-pin HV Alden connector. So I checked my 1986 vintage Spectra-Physics laser and indeed, longer plug is connected to laser chassis.

My question: would it be OK to connect anode with HV cable using single HV connector and ground with a standard ground wire and connector, just taking care to have +HV and GND plugs mechanically coupled together? Or is there a specific reason for having ground connected through HV connector?
