I think that a grounding in both is important; if the undergraduate research courses do not combine the two equally, then perhaps qualitative should be given the greater emphasis (for social sciences). But I feel that to be conversant with the principles of both is important.

I think they should study qualitative and quantitative research

I will suggest the need to understand both qualitative or quantitative research, however the final approach to adopt will depend on their research (and what they are exploring). From a Social Science perspective, Qualitative research is more applicable.

Both the approaches definitely. While quantitative techniques help in understanding the concept of methodological rigour, qualitative techniques shape theoretical understanding and arguments. 

I personally recommend both to be studied in undergraduate studies,  because both are important for undergraduate students to study and to have exposure to different methodologies of making research. and even mixed method is another methodology that students need to know and use. 

in real examples I have faced, that student needed to have exposure to qualitative too was some type of research titles that can not be answered or addressed using quantitative methodology, especially when the sample size or population is too small that would not be adequate for a survey. Moreover, if the students wants to get in to the details of study, then it can only be done through qualitative methodology by using methods as Interview, observation, and conceptual analysis.
