Currently I am clustering observations according to raw data - I know I have four factors along which I am seeking to cluster the data. However, I am not using the factor scores as input to the cluster analysis because then data variability basically gets lost - and this is what one is looking for in cluster analysis. Still, some papers I look at report using the factor scores as input to the cluster analysis instead of raw data. When does it make sense to use factor scores before clustering and when not?
